Sweet Peach Spiced Ham

Sweet Peach Spiced Ham

I originally came up with this Sweet Peach Spiced Ham recipe while I was living with my brother’s family. I would make dinner a couple times a week and babysit the kids while their parents were at work. One night, I wasn’t planning on making dinner, because I had to work that day. However, when I got home, my sister-in-law asked if I would come up with something for dinner.

So I set out to see what I had to work with. There were peaches and ham sitting in the fridge. She had originally planned to do something with the ham and then got busy. I could still do something with the ham and wondered if I could incorporate the peaches, so they wouldn’t go bad. That was when I came up with the idea to use them in a glaze for the ham.

I put in a little of this and a little of that and hoped for the best. When I pulled it out of the oven, it smelled like Christmas had come early! Of course, this dish works great on a week night just as well as a holiday.

My brother’s family gobbled it all up! This included my brother. . .who doesn’t like peaches. That dish became a family favorite, and I’ve made it several times since. (Although, I had to write things down as I threw in the “little bit of this and little bit of that”. . .so it could be recreated. Ha ha!)

This recipe begins with a good ham. Finding ham without all the “extras” is often a challenge. There seems to be many hams that have added stuff that doesn’t seem necessary. So if you’re like me, you try to find the ham with the least amount of stuff added.

As a side note, the biggest problem people have with ham, bacon, and sausage are the nitrates and nitrites – these help with color and preserving the cured meat. Some studies suggest that nitrates and nitrites can lead to cancer (but then again, what study doesn’t say that something leads to cancer). Take it for what you will. Just choose your favorite ham and dress it up with this yummy peach-spiced glaze.

Ingredients:

8-10 slices ham (if they are thinner slices you can do about 16-20)Sweet_Peach_Spiced_Ham_dnner_recipe_ingredients

¼ cup butter

¼ cup brown sugar

4 canned peach halves cut into chunks

½ cup syrup from canned peaches

1 tsp. clove

½ tsp. cinnamon

Directions:

In a 2-quart sauce pan, over medium heat, add butter and brown sugar.

When butter and sugar begin bubbling add syrup. Add the peach chunks and spices and heat through about 5-10 minutes stirring occasionally.

When my allergy to dairy became more severe, I had to change it up a bit. I substituted ghee for butter, honey for brown sugar. I also added allspice and nutmeg and canned my own peaches in honey syrup (which if you do can this way, you can just use 1 cup of the canned juice in place of the honey and water) for a fuller flavor.

Here is the recipe with the substitutes:

8-10 slices ham (if they are thinner slices you can do about 16-20)

½ cup honey

½ cup water

¼ cup ghee

4 canned peach halves cut into chunks

½ tsp. allspice

½ tsp. clove

½ tsp. cardamom

¼ tsp. cinnamon

Same directions as for the original recipe. If you are wondering how the allspice, clove or cardamom changes the flavor, check out my post about My Top 12 Spices to Keep on Hand.
